8 Back Pain Causes and Treatments

There are many causes of back pain, but most people have one or more of these conditions. Find out what they are and how to treat them.

Back pain is a very common condition that affects millions of Americans every year. It can range in severity from mild discomfort to debilitating pain. The good news is that there are many things you can do to ease the symptoms.

Spinal Stenosis

If you suffer from spinal stenosis, you might feel as though your life has been turned upside down. You may not even realize that you have this condition until you start having trouble walking or standing up straight. Fortunately, there are ways to relieve some of the symptoms associated with this condition.

Disc Bulges

In order to understand why you might develop spinal stenosis, you need to first understand what happens when discs bulge. A disc bulge occurs when the outer layer of an intervertebral disc becomes too thick. This creates pressure on the nerves that pass through the space between two vertebrae. As a result, you may begin to experience numbness, tingling, or weakness in your legs.

Lumbar Hernia

If you have lumbar hernia, you may feel pain in your lower back, buttocks, or groin area. You may also notice swelling in your abdomen.

Sciatica

Sciatica is caused by pressure on the sciatic nerve, which runs down the back of your leg. It often occurs when there is an injury to the spine or hip.

Degenerative Disk Disease

Degenerative disk disease (DDD) is a condition where the disks between vertebrae become weak and begin to bulge outward. This results in lower back pain and stiffness. DDD usually affects older adults, although younger people can also develop it.
